Berde

How did they pass the screening process? Men who have had sex with men are not allowed to donate blood.

I have sex with men. I do not have STD and I am a proud regular donor. Naman! Mga taong to kung maka comment!

@anonymous and dr magsasaka
hindi siguro homophobic ang med tech

The questionnaire that is administered during the screening process asks whether you are a male who has had sex with another male. Please look closely.
If you answer "yes" then you will be deferred as donor.
The possibility is, they take your blood anyway, and do not use it ( so as not to embarrass you?).
The guideline is stated in all technical manuals, all over the world. If you go against a guideline like that, the hospital can be sued in court.

The Department of Health people who made the red book, technical manual for operation of blood banks in this country based most of the guidelines on the technical manual of the AABB, American Association of Blood Banks.
Our guidelines are based on international standards, and if followed strictly no one can accuse us of substandard practices.
Luis Batchoy, did you answer "yes" to the following questions?
" In the past 12 month, have you
engaged in homosexual activity or received an injection other than under proper medical supervision?", "In the past 12 months, have you had a sexual partner who is bisexual or medically unsupervised user of intravenous drugs, who has taken clotting concentrates for bleeding problems, and has AIDS or has had a positive test for the AIDS virus?"
If you did, and were still allowed to donate blood, please tell me kindly which hospital is that?

para ito kay dr. magsasaka.
apparently yung cnasabi mong guidelines ay outmoded na. anong ibig sabihin niyan, dahil bakla ako meaning dirty blood ko? up urs po. :)

I am surprised that Filipino gay men have not raised the issue earlier. This apparent discrimination has been questioned by gay men groups in the US for more than a decade already. The AABB has found sufficient reason not to revise its guidelines.
Maybe it would be easier if people just try to even just google the terms "gay men blood donors" and read. It could be informative, gentlemen, and would also be more productive than bashing the messenger.
It is never too late to learn.

@Anonymous: This guideline is not outmoded. The point here is not whether you are gay or not. This is not about discrimination as well. This is about being a responsible individual. This is about taking extra precautions. It is a fact that HIV can be transmitted through blood transfusion.

I am bisexual myself and because I engage in sexual activities, I make sure that never donate blood for I know that I have to be responsible because I am not 100% aware of my status all the time even if I have already tested myself negative for at least twice now.

Homesexuals, bisexuals, and even heterosexuals who are not monogamous and have not practiced safe sex MUST NOT donate blood.

The reason is pretty obvious.

mga kafatid,

dati regular donor ako ng dugo, kaso just recently ko lang nalaman na HIV positive ako, kaya 'di na ko makapag-donate (nalaman ko rin lang sa screening ng pagdo-donate)...just want to share, VERY HIGH RISK sa HIV TAYONG mga BADING...lalo na kung you practice sodomy pa...a realization na nalaman ko ng masakit...life is VERY short for me now...kaya kung makapag-share sa ganito to save lives. gagawin ko...

That's the reason why I can't donate blood.

Aware ako sa procedures and there's no use for us complaining. Hindi naman nakasaad sa form na bawal mag donate ng dugo ang bading ah.

Besides, considering how promiscuous most of us are, talaga namang risky na magdonate tayo.

safak sa fez ang post ni mandaya!- pero it's not the doc magsasaka's ofenions that count naman diba, mali na kung mali. what matter most is the courage and willingness of our kafatids! hoy luis batchoy, bawiin mo na ung blood mo no! may point naman talaga si doc diba.

saka doc, baka naman ginamit ung blood for other medical purposes, like labs diba? malay mo... for sure nakatulong si patricia and fiona and dakila sila.

PEACE.

I'm sorry I sounded a bit harsh. But screening blood donors is part of my work, and as a matter of fact I do help the DoH come up with guidelines on other issues as well.

So, nagulat ako bigla meron sexually active PLUs donating blood, completely unaware that it should not happen, regardless of the good intentions. Yup, KG, you are correct. Nowhere in the donor screening questionnaire form does it state that sexually active gay men should not donate blood. The screening process does have ambiguities. (Please note: gay men who are not active sexually can donate. What constitutes "sex" is not defined. I remember this was contentious during Bill Clinton's time, as his people and perhaps himself maintained that oral sex is not sex. Or something like that...)
Medyo ungmammatical pa ang questionnaires in some portions. Pero ano magagawa ko? I spend so much time in consultative meetings with them, gratis, and ang mga details hindi ko matitingnan lahat.
So, hijos, please take note. HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C are not jokes. Once you have them, your life will change dramatically. BTW, HepB is easier to transmit compared to HIV.
Isa pa: the testing process in not 100% foolproof. Recent HIV infection may yield a negative result, hence the testing system is conservative or strict.

dr magsasaka..i don't know from which bukid you came from...having sex with another male is not an issue in donating blood..i live in the US and been donating for years now...maybe that regulation you were referring was during the time when HIV was just discovered...d pa ako pinapanganak non! :)

what is dont really understand why people equates being gay to being promiscuous?

"what is dont really understand why people equates being gay to being promiscuous?"
Because they have more partners over the course of their lifetime.

I have published work in scientific journals, and I know what I am talking about.

hello, as a student of medical anthropology specializing in gay men's health i agree with dr. magsasaka, pero dapat sana maging mas specific because not all gay men engage in multiple partners, siguro dapat ilagay sa questionnaire e have you engaged in multiple partners di ba? regardless of sexual orientation.
